Members of the 4th Frimley Scout Group are providing shelter for the homeless in South Sudan and Uganda. They are donating unused tents to World Emergency Relief UK, through the local Millets store, as part of the Charitable Tents Exchange scheme. The tents will be shipped to people in need of shelter in some of the poorest and most remote regions in the world.
While sorting through kit, Scouts from the 4th Frimley Group found several large tents that they no longer required. Despite being a little out of date, the tents are still in good condition and the scouts did not want to throw them away.
Fortunately the local Millets store, in Farnborough, is taking part in the Charitable Tents Exchange. The scheme allows people to donate their old tents to international development charity World Emergency Relief UK (WER). All the tents are checked for suitability and then shipped to people in need across the world. Tents have already been shipped to Burundi , Central Africa where they will be used to provide shelter to the Batwa people.
Shipments are planned to provide shelter in South Sudan and Uganda in the coming months so the 4th Frimley Scouts tents will be put to good use. In fact the tents will be used in tougher conditions than they ever have been before and for much longer. In Northern Uganda floods are expected in the early winter which will make thousands of people homeless. Tents like those donated by the scouts will house displaced people for up to three months whilst their homes can be repaired.
“Tents and camping are a bit of fun for most of us here in the UK,” said WER Chief Executive Alex Haxton. “But for the people who receive one of these tents, it will be often be their only shelter, for months at a time. The generosity of the 4th Frimley Scouts, and others like them across the country, will make a huge difference.”
